Common Concerns of Freshmen

(Social)

Submitted by: Craig from Indiana State University

I printed each slide off on a different colored piece of paper so that it stood out

A bulletin board made to address some of the common concerns that incoming students feel, especially those that are first generation. This BB addresses those concerns and explains ways to combat them.

hamburgers, hotdogs, frisbees, balls

This was a summer program which included the RA's cooking hamburgers and hotdogs residents given the option to play ultimate frisbee, kickball, or four square. This was a great success. Residents were intrigued by the name and came out to play!

quesstion preparation, snacks

I found several questions like do you like cats or dogs better, have you been outside of the country, would you rather live at the beach or in the mountains, etc. that I asked at my first program. It was a great way to meet the residents and find commonalities. Each resident was given the option to answer and several even shared short stories.

Life Size Clue

(Social)

Submitted by: Samantha from University of Pittsburgh at Bradford

Dice, game cards, walkie talkies are nice.

Clue with a college spin and on the life size scale. Use the RA's as the pawns (instead of Mr. Green, etc. use the RA's). Pick murder weapons that can found on campus. Use a campus building as the 'mansion'. It takes a little more time to plan out, but the jist is you customize it to your campus. Make groups of 3 to 6 people to be paired with an RA 'pawn', and play just like the game but bigger.

Mitch

Ice cream, desired toppings, bowls, spoons, and napkins, some type of refreshment

Usually in the spring, we have an ice cream social in our community center. We always run out of supplies and the head count of residents who attend is always around 150. It brings people out of there caves and allows them to socialize over some nice ice cream.

Battle of the Sexes

Battle of the Sexes Board Game

A really good idea for the beginning of the year is to get a co-ed floor together for a game of Battle of the Sexes. This board game is a great way to show people how stereotypes are common and how they can hurt a person's feelings, even if it's meant only as a joke. Not only does this give people a lot of laughs but this is especially great for freshman halls. Having single sex floors go against each other is an easy way to break the ice and have a good time

Door Stops

See above supplies.

This is a really easy back to school program. When residents first come back to the dorms it's a lot of fun to spend a night decorating rocks to use as door props for their suite/dorm rooms. This is a fun social activity that also promotes community building as more people will have their doors open. The only supplies you would need are rocks, paint, glue, glitter, etc.

Movies and Pizza

Pizza, drivers & cars, and probably permission from RD

A great initial bonding floor program is simply going out for pizza and movies. Sure you can stay in, but there is somthing different about actually going OUT and doing it. Just pick one of the new movies out, set a date a week or two in advance and have people volunteer to drive.
